During this strange social-distanced time, many people are posting music videos they have recorded at home. I recorded Holly playing this lovely, soothing piece and thought I needed to share it with you. I hope it brings you as much joy to you as it does to me.
So beautiful! I’m glad you can at least play piano during this social isolation time. I didn’t realize you had one in your apartment – I was picturing you still having to bike ride to somewhere to play the piano (I think this was the case early in your Italy adventures?). Holly, You don’t know me, but my wife just gave me the wonderful article in the NYT about your career and move to Italy. So, looking around on the internet I found you playing two of my father’s favorite pieces. Debussy’s Plus que lente, and Chopin’s Nocturne, Opus 9, no.1.. He was a mathematician and colleague of Einstein at the Institute for Adv.Study in Princeton. He was also a professional pianist in his early days. Played 3 hours a day, throughout his life. You love Italy, so I must mention that Dad was a corresponding member of the Accademia dei Lincei. His ideas in math (Morse Theory) came often to him as he played the piano. Thank you for the beautiful music, and for the memories.
Hi William – my husband, who generally monitors the blog, just showed me your kind message. Thank you for the lovely memory of your father. My father was actually my inspiration musically as well. He was an aerospace engineer by profession, but with a deeply musical heart. His favorite pieces were the Chopin Nocturnes and I never play them without his memory in my heart. I’m so glad you enjoyed both the article and the music.
